It’s almost every scuba diver’s dream to dive with Manta Rays. It is no surprise, as these majestic animals glide so effortlessly underwater, you can’t help but admire them. Bali is one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the Manta Rays, more specifically in the waters around the island of Nusa Penida.
Manta Rays
Among the many marine creatures you may encounter as a diver, Manta Rays are perhaps the most graceful, enigmatic and elegant creatures of the deep. There’s something mesmerizing about the way they fly underwater with seemingly so little effort.
For those unfamiliar, there are two distinct species of Manta Rays: Reef Manta Rays and Oceanic, or Giant Manta Rays. As their name suggests, Reef Mantas live and stick to areas with coral reefs, making them the more coastal Mantas. They are generally smaller and live in large populations. These are the Mantas that are frequently spotted in and around the waters of Bali and Nusa Penida.
Oceanic Manta Rays, or Giant Manta Rays, are relatives of Reef Mantas and are considerably bigger. They are migratory in nature, meaning they travel out in the open ocean for mating, feeding and other activities, which explains their larger size as they must travel incredible distances in the deep ocean.
