If you are inexperienced in Freediving, you probably ask yourself how Freediving and Yoga belongs to each other:
“It is all about relaxing and and using your breath to calm down your mind!”
To understand the importance of Yoga for Freedivers we should clarify what exactly Yoga and Freediving are:
The Definition of Yoga simply is: Yoga is a group of physical, mental and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India.
– good to know hm?
You can not generalise Yoga, there are many different ways to practice Yoga. For example:
Hatha is a general category which includes most yoga styles. Especially Asanas (Yoga Postures) and Pranayama (Breathing Exercises). It’s highly recommended for beginners, because in most cases it’s relatively gentle and slow.
Let me explain why it’s so important for Freedivers: Yoga increases the awareness of the body and the control of your breath and mind. All the things you need for Freediving.
The official definition of Freediving: Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on divers ability to hold their breath until resurfacing rather than on the use of a breathing apparatus such as scuba gear.
For beginners it’s most of the times, hard to hold their breath for a certain amount of time. As they aren’t relaxed enough and don’t know how to control their body.
For this reason, literally every Freediver practices Yoga!
Through targeted exercises you will learn how to increase your time underwater and keep your body fit. Nothing would be more distracting than getting in trouble underwater, just because you don’t know how to control your breath or how to prepare your body before a dive!
